I DARED TO CALL HIM FATHER by Bilquis Sheikh

Here is another facinating book:

Publisher: Chosen Books
25th Anniv. edition (2003)
ISBN-10: 0800793242
ISBN-13: 978-0800793241
I Dared to Call Him Father: The Miraculous Story of a Muslim Woman's Encounter with God
The story follows a Muslim woman from Pakistan, Madame Bilquis Sheikh, as she struggles through a crossroads. Her husband divorced and left her with three children, a boy and two girls. She retreats to an obscure part of the town and lives like a recluse with two house maids – one a Christian and the other a Muslim, a Christian chauffer and an adopted grandson Mahmud.

The book narrates a series of strange happenings surrounding her: a strange hand brushing her shoulder one evening, a young Christian convert girl murdered on the street, her lively grandson Mahmud becoming afflicted with an unknown illness and two strange dreams – one an encounter with Jesus Christ as her guest at dinner table; and the other an encounter with a Perfume salesman. These events caused her to reminisce on her life and her strict Muslim upbringing. Trying to read her Koran led her to begin to ask questions about Jesus Christ. In the confusion and in quest for an answer she went to see local Missionaries who gave her answers to her troubling dreams and a copy of the New Testament. Another strange illness of the grandson took her to a Christian Hospital where she met a Christian Doctor who again spoke to her about Jesus Christ. After praying for her, the doctor ended by asking Bilquis to address God as her Father. On December 12, on her 47th Birthday, she called God “My Father”

Standing By

God is faithful

In 1346, during the Hundred Years’ War, the English army of King Edward III met the French Battalion at Crecy, France. The King’s Son prince Edward, led one vital Division of the British Force while Edward III stood nearby with a strong band of soldiers, ready to send relief if he saw the need. Soon after the battle started, the Prince thought he was in danger; so he sent for help. But the King didn’t come; so young Edward sent another message, pleading for immediate assistance. His father responded by telling the courier:
“Go tell my son that I am not so inexperienced a commander as not to know when help is needed, nor so careless a father as not to send it.”
“God is faithful” (First Corinthians 1:9). No matter how hot the conflict, struggling Christian, the Lord is ready to intervene at the right moment. He is always standing by.

INSPIRE YOUR KIDS TO GREATNESS by Jerry Johnston

We will be periodically doing Book Reviews posts on this blog. Here is an oldie for you:

Publisher: Zondervan (1993)
ISBN-10: 0310578612
ISBN-13: 978-0310578611
Inspire Your Kids to Greatness: How Parents Can Nurture God's Next Generation
In many homes today, and with particular reference to Christian homes, the problem parents and children face is problem of Generation Gap and because of this, many parents tend to have ideas which their children call archaic while their children have ideas which the parents think are weird.  How do we communicate with these children? I found the book “Inspire your kids to Greatness” by Jerry Johnston an attempt to bridge the divide. Johnston approaches the issue from both sides and arrives at an acceptable “compromise”. The book is divided into sixteen chapters with an afterword as the summarizing chapter.
“Would you know greatness when you see it?”
To different people “greatness” means different things but Johnston takes his definition from the words of Christ which associates greatness to humility and service (Matthew 18:3-4); words which are not usually associated with greatness. Greatness begins on the knees as the one seeks the Lord for guidance and cannot be achieved without Trust, Repentance, Confidence, Commitment, Courage, Faith, Meekness, Humility and Patience.

Going out to Evangelize? Wait a Moment!

Evangelism

Romans 9:1-5; 10:1-4

I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

In the Scripture we have three outstanding cases of burden for souls or what we call in modern terms evangelism

Ø Naaman’s house-maid in Second Kings 5:3
Ø The four lepers in Samaria in Second Kings 7: 3-11
Ø Paul’s burden for his brethren in the flesh, his kinsmen in Romans 9:1-5; 10:1-3

We shall very briefly consider, in the time available to us, only the case of Paul – using a few points raised.
